In July 2013, Reporters Without Borders launched a petition protesting against censorship in Vietnam and denouncing the authorities there, who treat freedom of information activists as criminals:

On Wednesday September 25th, we'll be attempting to present the petition above to the Vietnamese Prime Minister. We already have 20 000 signatures, but the more we can collect, the more powerful the petition will be.

You'll need to make sure you sign before Tuesday September 24th if you want to be involved.

In recent years, there've been several waves of arrests in Vietnam, targeting those who try to provide independent sources of news and current affairs online. Dozens of bloggers are currently in prison - just for fighting for freedom of information.

Ký giả Không biên giới yêu cầu Việt Nam thả 35 blogger đang bị cầm tù

Thông cáo báo chí của Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới, RSF, hôm nay nói rằng trong khi Chủ tịch nước Việt Nam Trương Tấn Sang chuẩn bị gặp Tổng Thống Hoa Kỳ Barack Obama, thì Việt Nam là quốc gia thứ nhì trên thế giới cầm giữ nhiều blogger và dân mạng nhất thế giới, chỉ sau có Trung Quốc.

Theo tổ chức này, các blogger và dân mạng trong cuộc đang phải chịu những bản án tù dài ngày, lên tới 13 năm về những tội trạng ngụy tạo, họ là nạn nhân của chiến dịch đàn áp hà khắc của chính phủ ông đối với những tiếng nói bất đồng.

Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới đã phát động một kiến nghị, đòi Hà Nội trả tự do cho tất cả các blogger ấy ngay lập tức, và vô điều kiện.

Dù chỉ mới được phát động có vài ngày, bản kiến nghị đã thu thập được hơn 3000 chữ ký, và theo RSF, mức độ ủng hộ đó chứng tỏ tính chính đáng của chiến dịch đấu tranh này.

Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới nói: “Các blogger đóng một vai trò thiết yếu trong việc cung cấp thông tin đáng tin cậy hơn, vô tư hơn, so với giới truyền thông chính thức tại Việt Nam, vốn phải tuân theo lệnh trên, và bị kiểm duyệt nặng nề.”

Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới kêu gọi trả tự do lập tức và vô điều kiện cho các blogger và dân mạng ở Việt Nam, và đề nghị nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam hủy bỏ chế độ kiểm duyệt, rút lại những đạo luật có tính đàn áp thường được sử dụng chống giới blogger và dân mạng, đặc biệt là điều khoản 88 và 79 của Bộ Luật Hình sự Việt Nam.

Bản kiến nghị của Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới nêu tên của các blogger và dân mạng bị cầm tù, trong đó có Điếu Cày, nhà bất đồng chính kiến Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức, Luật sư Cù Huy Hà Vũ, Tiến sĩ Lê Quốc Quân, blogger Tạ Phong Tần.

Theo Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới, nhà chức trách Việt Nam đã tuyên án phạt 48 nhà đấu tranh nhân quyền Việt Nam tổng cộng 166 năm tù chỉ nội trong năm 2012.

Việt Nam xếp hạng thứ 172 trên 179 quốc gia trong chỉ số tự do báo chí của Tổ chức Ký giả Không biên giới, và nằm trong danh sách Kẻ thù của Internet năm 2013.


RWB calls for the release
of 35 jailed Vietnamese bloggers

Vietnam is the world’s second biggest prison for bloggers and cyber-dissidents, after China.

Vietnam’s bloggers are a source of independently-reported news and information that is an alternative to the government media. They write about corruption, environmental problems and the country’s political developments.

There have been several waves of arrests of bloggers, netizens and journalists in recent years. Mindful of the Arab uprisings, the Vietnamese authorities have been cracking down harder in order to suppress dissent and prevent any destabilization.

The 35 bloggers currently detained include the human rights activist Dieu Cay and the lawyer Le Quoc Quan. They also include Paulus Le Son, Ta Phong Tan, Tran Huynh Duy Thuc and Nguyen Tien Trung. They are all serving long sentences on such trumped-up charges as subversion, anti-government propaganda and trying to overthrow the government.

Their families are subjected to harassment and smear campaigns. The mother of the jailed blogger Ta Phong Tan took her own life by setting fire to herself in 2012 in an act of despair about the way her daughter has been treated.

Reporters Without Borders calls for the immediate release of imprisoned bloggers and netizens, the lifting of censorship and the repeal of the repressive laws that are used against news providers, especially article 88 and clause 1 of article 79 of the criminal code.
